Indie is a very loose category of games made by small self-owned studios and released on a variety of formats, most typically Steam or mobile devices. It is also a term used to market games to some audiences, sch as on the Xbox Live service.
Several kinds of developer describe themselves as indie. To some the label simply means to be free of the constraints of publishers, whereas to others it has a more artistic meaning (similar to indie movies). Some indies have ambitions to one day be a big studio, whereas others just want to be left alone. Some are fringe game makers, ambitious and experimental. Others service relic genres and long-dead niches of the market.
