A live action roleplaying game (or LARP) is a kind of roleplaying game in which players play scenarios in real world locations rather than around a table. There is usually much more of a focus on playing within the spirit of the game (such as by acting), and players often dress up in costume.
LARPs tend to have small, but very loyal, subcultures of fans. Murder mystery weekends, swords and sorcery using foam weapons and modern gothic horror games form the bulk of LARP games. Some pen and paper roleplaying game conventions also run LARP events based on specific scenarios in a wide variety of settings.
