In games, 'narrative' variously means story, progression, phases of play and change, writing techniques and other factors. It is also often twinned with adjectives such as ‘interactive narrative’, ‘nonlinear narrative’ or ‘linear narrative’, but equally can stand alone.
Although narrative and story are often used interchangeably, narrative often pertains more to theory rather than practical application. So it tends to be used more in academic and business contexts as a descriptor of type, form and a subject of study, whereas game makers usually talk about story directly.
