Pen and paper roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire: The Masquerade, Shadowrun and Call of Cthulhu have provided much inspiration to videogames past and present. Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, Bioware’s games and even Zynga games all use pen and paper concepts like character levels, experience points, classes, quests and dungeons.
Pen and paper roleplaying games are a main inspiration source for narrativist theories of games and storytelling. They are played in the theatre of the mind, by groups, and moderated or guided by a games master. Even with all that, however, a tension has existed in pen and paper circles since their invention between power gamers who love the mechanical layer and character gamers who love the fantasy.
They are referred to as pen and paper roleplaying games in the videogame industry, to distinguish from computer roleplaying games. In the pen and paper industry the distinction is reversed.
