The term 'strategy game' loosely describes any game in which the player controls troops with the objective of defeating an opposing force. Most strategy games are based around economies rather than physical activities, as the gameplay involves logistics and puzzle solving.
Chess is a strategy game, as are StarCraft and Civilization. Many strategy games involve serial (turn-based) play, but one of the greatest inventions of the videogame has been creating compelling single and multiple (conventionally called real time strategy) play experiences around strategy.
