Levels are a type of game geography which are enclosed, organised around one specific task and unbroken.
A level has a start and end point, which can be described in terms of reaching a designated area, or completing a specific win condition. Levels may be paths, maps, arenas, race tracks or various other shapes and sizes. Many levels are composed of contiguous zones. They are also often inherit their themes from settings or planes.
Games use many names to describe levels, such as map, mission, dungeon, episode, stage, arena or chapter.

- An expression of player progress with a numeric meter (called character level).
- An informal expression of difficulty (called difficulty level).
