Performance is a fuzzy term which describes the kind of play that players engage with when acting, playing musical instruments or dancing. The objective of the play is to entertain others with the rendition of a created work. Performance has many forms, some stricter than others.
Performance is rarely seen as a form of play in videogames, sports or board games. However improvised performance is a significant component of both pen and paper and live action roleplaying games.
